Crochet Tips: Magic Ring / Magic Circle

For those of you who is into Amigurumi, you will noticed that there are generally 2 ways to start a pattern: “Chain 2 Method” or “Magic Ring” (Some call it the Magic Circle). These 2 methods are used for creating a round shape Amigurumi (e.g. the head, the body, etc)

I’ve always used the “Chain 2 method” for my crochet projects until I saw some on-line patterns stating “Using Magic Ring to start the circle”. I went to research on this method and I fell in love with it! From then on, I always use the Magic Ring Method because it doesn’t leave a hole in the middle of the circle. Not having a hole in the middle will also mean that fiberfill / stuffings is not visible. Hooray to this amazing Technique.

And now, i want to share this technique with all of you!

Can you see the difference between both methods? Chain 2 method leaves a tiny visible hole that always bothers me because i want my amigurumi(s) to look neat and i do not want stuffings to be showing.

Here’s my little tutorial:

Step 1: Use the yarn and wrap around your index finger.

Step 2: Make sure you wrap 2 rounds. You should be able to see 2 loops on your index finger.

Step 3: Use a crochet hook and slide it through both loops.

Step 4: It should look like this. Pull the left yarn into the right loop.

Step 5: And it should look like this.

Step 6: Yarn over and pull through the small loop (not the one on the index finger) Refer to next picture.

Step 7: It should look like this. Now you are ready to single crochet or double crochet into the index finger loop. Usually we single crochet 6 times or 8 times depending on the pattern. After you are done, pull the shorter yarn to close the gap. A nice round shape is formed.

Of course, it might still be a little confusing. So i did a tutorial on VIDEO! Here’s the link:

I’ve just set up a YouTube Account and I’ll be uploading more Crochet Tips in future. Hope this will help you in your crochet projects. I have so much more to share. So stay tune and Happy Crocheting!

Thanks for dropping by.

Loves, Rachel H
